Do Schools Shortchange Girls?
“How Schools Shortchange Girls” was a report presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in 1992. The report stated that in schools, girls are silenced, have low self- esteem and can’t keep up with boys in certain subjects like Science, Technology and Mathematics. The report argues for more debate on educational reform in gender equity. Since this report was released, there have been a number of debates and arguments both supporting and refuting this stance.
This website provides the historical context of the debate as well as key statistics. It highlights some of the arguments that have been made on both sides of the debate. Resources are listed for use in classrooms and for informational purposes.
